Mike Brinkman, Master Code Professional and Certified Access Specialist
Mike Brinkman is certainly a Jack of All Trades when it
comes to his multi-faceted role at Precision Inspection Company, Inc. From
building inspections, to building official, to code enforcement, to plan review,
Mike has done it all. In June of 2009, Mike added to his bevy of certificates
the designation of Master Code Professional.
From the August, 2007 issue of the Building Safety Journal,
regarding the Master Code Professional (MCP) credential:
“Earning the MCP credential is a
significant personal accomplishment…requiring successful completion of an
extensive series of objective and written examinations. Many of the examination credits are from core
certifications, covering the areas of Residential Building Inspector,
Commercial Building Inspector, Commercial Electrical Inspector, Commercial
Mechanical Inspector, Commercial Plumbing Inspector, Building Plans Examiner,
Accessibility Inspection Plans Examiner and Certified Building Official. The
remaining credits are electives selected from a variety of areas such as Fire
Inspector, Commercial Energy Inspector, Electrical Plans Examiner, Property
Maintenance and Housing Inspector, and others.”
Mike has always been a proponent of lifelong learning. When he started in the building inspection
industry, he had an excellent general knowledge of the construction industry,
but it didn’t take him long to realize that the International Code Council,
then the International Conference of Building Officials, had a wealth of
information presented in their various classes and resources. Mike began to
avail himself of these resources and get his certifications. Over the years,
situations required Mike to get different certifications, from Plan Checker to
Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical inspector certifications. One of Precision
Inspection Company, Inc.’s contracts required Mike to get his Energy
Inspector/Plan Checker certifications, and around this time, Mike noticed that
he was very close to obtaining his Master Code Professional certification.
The Master Code Professional credential requires
approximately 14-18 certifications, depending on the elective examinations
chosen, and can require 5 or more years of dedication to learning and studying.
Obtaining it is no mean feat, and represents the ultimate in equipping a person
to manage a building department, supervise all types of inspection and plan
review staff, while performing all types of inspections for any project. In our
research, we found there are only 19 Master Code Professionals in the state of California, and Mike is
one of those honored few. Precision Inspection Company, Inc. is extremely proud
of Mike for all of his dedication, performance, and achievement in obtaining
his Master Code Professional certification.
All of this education experience made Mike a great fit as
Precision Inspection Company, Inc.’s Manager of Education. He is the go-to person for all of our code
questions or interpretations, and he performs in this role admirably. He also held the position of the Chairman of
the Education Committee for the Yosemite Chapter of the ICC for the past 3
years, and just recently has been sworn in as Treasurer. Earning his Master
Code Professional credential along with the abovementioned education positions
show Mike’s dedication to lifelong learning like nothing else.
Very recently, Mike was able to add another hat to the many
he already wears: CASp Inspector / Plan Reviewer.
In April of 2004, California
officially launched the Certified Access Specialist program (CASp). What followed were years of formulating the
details of the program, developing an examination and accompanying study
materials, and finalizing the requirements for this new program. The CASp
program provides a certification system which allows inspectors to become
proficient in the detailed disability access standards of the state of California. A CASp inspector is able to perform
accessibility inspections and plan review to help businesses ensure compliance
with these standards, which are becoming more important every day.
When the instructional materials were announced in 2008,
Mike began studying, and obtained his Certified Access Specialist certification
in September 2009. His specialized services have already been requested by
companies who desire to be on the cutting edge of compliance, and Mike has
already performed inspections related to his CASp credentials. In our research we have found that only 4 individuals
possess both Master Code Professional and Certified Access Specialist (CASp)
credentials in the state of California,
and Mike is one of them. We are proud of
Mike’s accomplishments in becoming the highest caliber code professional
possible, and wish him continued success in his educational endeavors.
Mike’s dedication to the construction industry is
invaluable, and the jurisdictions in which Mike has worked have reaped the
rewards of his hard work. Precision Inspection Company, Inc. salutes Mike as an
amazing asset us and the communities in which we work. We look forward to
seeing where Mike will go next with his lifelong learning and his dedication to
service.
